Company History

Alex Matrosov typifies the Canadian immigrant experience. He arrived in Canada with little more than the shirt on his back, worked hard, raised a family and with a keen entrepreneurial vision he achieved considerable success.

Alex Matrosov helped pioneer wheelchair accessible transportation in the Greater Toronto Area and now operates a multi million dollar transportation company. He literally learned the business from the ground up starting out as a limousine driver at Pearson International Airport.

In 1982 Alex obtained his taxi cab driver’s license from the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto and in 1983 he purchased his first taxi cab plate and was associated with “A Quick Taxi Brokerage”.

In 1995 Alex founded Toronto Para Transit, today the leading provider of wheelchair accessible transportation in Ontario. Over the last twenty five years he has developed expertise that is unmatched in the industry. Here he developed a successful and expanding business transporting children with special needs. One of his major clients was McCluskey Transportation. His relationship with McCluskey has now spanned over twenty years passing down to his son Jack.

Alex’s son Jack Matrosov is the General Manager of Toronto Para Transit ( and now known as CHECKER TAXI ) and operates Wheelchair Accessible Transit which has been in operation since 2000. Jack gained knowledge and experience in all aspects of the accessible transportation industry working for his father Alex from 1995.He continues in this role today.

As a result of the fine work that the two companies do, they have been rewarded with significant contracts with large organizations such as Wheel-Trans, the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board, the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Separate School Board as well as numerous hospitals, nursing homes, insurance companies and the public in general.

Since 2011 to 2013, Wheelchair Accessible Transit and Toronto Para Transit work very closely with the taxi industry stakeholders and City of Toronto officials on the Taxi Industry Reform. At that time Toronto Para Transit name was changed to Checker Taxi, which is part of the group of companies with Wheelchair Accessible Transit Inc.

The company has become the largest transportation provider to the disabled, aging and able bodied community.
